Deborah Metters

Regional Programs Manager

Jagera/Ugarapul Country, South East Queensland

Deborah is an ecologist with more than 25 years of experience in private land conservation. She led the expansion of the respected Land for Wildlife South East Queensland program to nearly 6,000 member properties and has partnered with local governments, regional NRM bodies, universities and community groups to strengthen conservation outcomes.

Identifying a gap in legacy planning for conservation properties, Deborah completed further studies in philanthropy and developed advisory services for landholders exploring long-term stewardship. These services, and more, are now offered through BioDiversity Legacy.

Her early career included conservation partnerships with First Nations communities in the Pilbara and coordinating the peak environment organisation for Central Australia.

Through working with hundreds of landholders, Deborah understands the realities of restoration, biodiversity protection and conservation covenanting. In 2023, she purchased a Nature Refuge in south‑east Queensland, where she practices conservation land management to protect remnant habitat trees and grasslands - living artefacts of First Nations fire management.

Deborah is an avid birder, field naturalist, wildlife photographer and active citizen scientist through eBird and iNaturalist. She is excited to bring the services of BioDiversity Legacy to the SEQ region - a place with incredible biodiversity, huge development pressures and an active conservation community.
